South Kaibab Trail

View upward to Yaki Point from South Kaibab Trail below
Yaki Point viewed from South Kaibab Trail.  After just an hour or two of hiking, we look back at how much altitude we've lost.  With every step comes the recognition that a step twice as hard will have to carry us back up tomorrow.

South Kaibab Trail
The South Kaibab Trail begins near Yaki Point on the South Rim of the canyon.  It's a 7.3 mile hike from there to the Bright Angel Campground in the bottom of the canyon; another half mile or so to Phantom Ranch.  The trail follows Cedar Ridge, passing around O'Neill Butte, crossing the Tonto East Trail at The Tipoff, finally crossing the Colorado River at Kaibab Bridge.

The trail provides some of the most breathtaking views as you descend into the canyon; the trade-off for the unobstructed views is complete exposure to the sun.
